Corsets And Bustiers Biography
Lingerie is everywhere. Yes, most women wear bras and panties on a daily basis, and yes, many women even have a special something set aside for that special someone. But the idea of lingerie is much bigger than that.Today, it is almost impossible to think of undergarments as truly undergarments; lingerie is an integral part of contemporary fashion. It is not only meant to be seen, but it is often meant to make a statement. After all, what would Lady Gaga be without her thong bodysuits or her seashell bra? Or what about Rihanna with her sexy lingerie-inspired looks on the red carpet?
Interestingly, lingerie (in our understanding of the word) has been an important part of the female wardrobe since at least the 18th Century, and by studying the history of lingerie, one can discern much about the evolution of womanhood across time and space. And from now until November 15th you can do just that by visiting the Exposed: A History Of Lingerie exhibit at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
The exhibit includes over 70 different pieces of intimate apparel from the museum’s archives, including bras and petticoats by Christian Dior, outrageous nightgowns and skimpy, lightweight bras from the 1960s, intricate, silky corsets from the 19th Century, and even modern pieces by companies such as Hanky Panky and Agent Provocateur. The exhibition is arranged chronologically, giving the viewer a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the timeline of women’s intimates.
Upon visiting the exhibit, one can expect an overall underlying narrative concerning the fluidity of collective notions concerning what constitutes the ideal female body. Often, the garments were actually designed to modify the way a woman’s body appeared. Of course, in different eras, different silhouettes were preferred, whether it be full-figured or svelte, athletic or busty, hourglass or twig-like.
And with these ever-changing perceptions of the ideal image came ever-changing perceptions of how a woman should not only look, but how a woman should behave and how that behavior should correspond with how she looks. This concept also calls into question the notion of stereotypes and preconceived notions; why should a woman be restricted in her behavior by what she chooses to wear under her clothing? Regardless, the reasons for all of these changes are immensely complicated, and while the exhibit does a fantastic job of displaying the results of such changes, it does seem to lack a bit in the realm of providing context or explanation. However, some individual research on the side can do wonders to give the show that extra boost!
The exhibition is also fascinating in that it clearly demonstrates the massive influence the structure and style of underwear has on the structure and style of outerwear, and vice versa. The world of fashion has come to embrace the coquettish, erotic, and elegant flavors that encapsulate the design of lingerie, and its incorporation into high fashion and popular culture is only becoming more and more apparent each and every day.
If for nothing else, you should see the exhibit to admire all of the beautifully exquisite pieces and for the opportunity to realize that women’s underwear is more than meets the eye. Girls, you might be particularly interested if you hate bras; just go look at the corsets and girdles from the 18th Century and trust me, you’ll be thanking your lucky stars that bras are probably your main garment struggle when it comes to total comfort. Not to mention, it’s free!
