He didn’t quite clap his hands when the camera started rolling but he did say ‘hullo-ello’. Shades of Dixon of Dock Green.
Some advance rumours had led one to expect a more serious, sober approach to the programme – lots of Reithian bottom. The mature, sometimes snarling scepticism of Jeremy Paxman was gone. In its place we had giggles, wriggles, frisky Evan’s eyes narrowing into two diagonals as he essayed a look of shrewd mateyness.
We had breathlessness, shorter items, actually too many items. Barely were subjects launched upon than they were discarded. On! Next! You’ve had yer lot!
There was a tingle of attempted youthfulness, and not just in shaven-headed Evan, whose head has been mown as tight as a Test wicket. We had a surfeit of handsome youths and a cheap set (to be fair, it was a makeshift effort at the Tory Party conference, rather than the usual London studio).
The big scoop of this opening show was an interview with David Cameron – a Prime Minister at a time of military action, on the day his Chancellor has just indicated further heavy cuts in Government spending.
Was this an occasion for something in-depth and punchy?
Er, nope. Mr Cameron was given a few early questions about foreign policy, but then we moved on to a bizarre section when Evan threw him three apparently important questions which would show where the PM stood politically: did he like pounds and ounces or kilograms (he liked lb and oz); did he mind if men kissed in public (he did not); and would he want a dim Brit to be employed over a bright Latvian (up to a point, Lord Copper)?
Mr Cameron, who in public has perfect manners, went along with these questions happily enough, though he seemed a bit baffled that his interrogator should descend to such a level.
