Corset Top Biography
A corset is a garment worn to hold and train the torso into a desired shape for aesthetic or medical purposes (either for the duration of wearing it or with a more lasting effect). Both men and women are known to wear corsets, though women more commonly do.
In recent years, the fashion industry has also borrowed the term "corset" to refer to tops which, to varying degrees, mimic the look of traditional corsets without actually acting as them. While these modern corsets and corset tops often feature lacing or boning and generally imitate a historical style of corsets, they have very little, if any, effect on the shape of the wearer's body. Genuine corsets are usually made by a corsetmaker and are frequently fitted to the individual wearer.
From a Margaret Thatcher suit to a punk wedding dress, a new exhibit in London called “Women Fashion Power” will showcase how clothes have made the woman, boosting careers over the centuries through fashion.
Architect Zaha Hadid, whose world-wide resume includes Michigan’s Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, designed this exhibition, which opens Wednesday at the Design Museum. It begins with a look at women’s outfits from 1850 through today and then tracks how cultural and historical events have changed women’s attire. Over the years, says curator Donna Loveday, women have gone from wearing suits that imitate male style to show their strength to donning softer, more feminine silhouettes.
While the 1980s power suit, she says, was hard and aggressive, based on a “male construct” and worn with tied back hair, now women tend to dress in a more relaxed manner. “Over the course of the 20th century, gradually women have taken complete control over the way they dress away from playing it safe and playing by the rules,” she adds.
Ms. Loveday displays designs from 19th-century “dress reformers” who first tried to take women out of stiff petticoats and crinolines. There are Hollywood glamour gowns, wartime utility uniforms and space-race-inspired dresses bedecked with vinyl and metal.
The exhibit’s final section highlights the attire of modern-day female leaders such as Julia Peyton-Jones, Serpentine Gallery co-director, and Wei Sun Christianson, Morgan Stanley co-CEO of Asia Pacific. Each of these women, Ms. Lovejoy says, has her own take on power dressing. For example, Roksanda Ilincic, a Serbian fashion designer featured in the show, says, “I think getting dressed every day is like putting on armor; what you wear serves as your statement to the rest of the world about your taste and style.”
Does sexiness help women succeed? “It’s not about that anymore,” says Ms. Loveday. She hopes the exhibit will show that these days “women are dressing for themselves,” and mentions that Camila Batmanghelidjh, head of the nonprofit Kids Company and one of the women featured in the show, wears casual Crocs shoes to business meetings. “No matter what I wear it’s suitable for the crack den or the palace,” Ms. Batmanghelidjh says in a Q&A featured in the exhibit, which closes April 26.
I enjoyed this article very much. I've been reading Mademoiselle by Rhonda K. Garelick and I think Coco Chanel would have enjoyed this history of female dressing. She was a creator and influencer of a simpler and more functional style for women. I think this quote from the movie Working Girl sums up the idea, "You're the first woman I've seen at one of these things that dresses like a woman, not like a woman thinks a man would dress if he was a woman."
