A man who has the kind of “baggage” that it would surely take a team of sumo porters to shift.

For starters, there’s his former wife Brynne Edelsten, who recently appointed the famous debt collector, Mick Gatto, to negotiate her divorce settlement.

Then there are those pesky US business associates who are taking him to court over a failed venture and trying to have him declared bankrupt.

And to top it all off, Mick Jagger poked fun at him from the stage at the Rod Laver Arena.

Jagger sniped that at 71, he was too young for Gabi Grecko despite being just two months more youthful than her fiancee.

(Memo to Jagger: Mick doll, you’re kidding yourself, when it comes to seriously wrinkled skin, as Jumping Jack, you’re not looking too flash).
Perhaps Edelsten should have tried to dress up as a famous singer instead of committing a fashion faux pas by wearing that bright yellow suit of his twice to the Melbourne Cup carnival.

Of course, all this is a lot to take for Grecko, the New York model and fashion designer, who has had what can only be described as a turbulent relationship with Edelsten since they officially started dating in May.

They made their first public outing at the funeral of the legendary AFL coach, Tom Hafey. As an introduction to Melbourne society, it was one hell of a coming-out party.

Unfortunately for Grecko, Geoffrey Edelsten is not one of your elite money bags who can dispatch a private jet to collect her and her multitude of scary looking fashion accessories from New York.
Flying in commercially on Melbourne Cup morning was a logistical nightmare for the nightclub queen.

While most other socialites were sipping champagne while their make-up artists and hairdressers tended to them, Grecko was on her hands and knees in the minuscule First Class toilet on an aeroplane high over the Pacific. More about that later.

She purchased the towering feathered headpiece and matching arm cuff she wore on the day from Gothic Renaissance in New York.

East Village locals know it as the shop for steel-boned corsets, spider-adorned suspenders with coffin-shaped clasps and zombie-bride corset dresses with rose embroidery and long lace trains.

Of course, it’s one of Grecko’s favourite stores but shipping from there was always going to be difficult. She had to take care of that herself.
“I had to mail it and it was so huge that I got the biggest box ever,” she laments. “It only arrived on Cup eve.”

The bejewelled clown corset she wore was from Sex & The City’s costume designer, Patricia Field’s Bowery store. You could almost see Carrie wearing it on the series but for Grecko, who doesn’t have a fashion profile, it was a hard look to pull off.

“I got into the corset just as the plane was about to land because it’s a pretty stiff garment,” she explains. “It has lots of beading and it felt as though it was made out of rock. It was really hard to move in it.”

She did her glittery make-up in the air but this was also a bit of a nightmare.

“I was putting glitter on my arms during the flight and it was getting all over the seat,” she says. She moved into the loo to try to apply it to her face but this was a lot more difficult than she thought that it would be.
“It went everywhere,” she says.
“I felt so bad so I was trying to clean the bathroom floor on the plane. The glitter was just everywhere — on the toilet, on the sink — and I knew that they would know where it was coming from so I tried not to leave a trace.”

It was exhausting even before she landed and sped out to the Cup where Edelsten dropped to his knee to propose to her in the Birdcage. No sooner was the pear-shaped diamond ring on her finger than it slid off in the Emirates marquee only to be triumphantly retrieved by her.

Little wonder she was so emotionally and physically wrung out that by Thursday, she was reduced to conducting her media interview over the phone from her bed.
“New York is the best place because they have some really good Christmas decorations and then there is the tree lighting,” she says.

She also hopes that they will spend more time in the US as a couple, especially because she said that Edelsten hopes to start a business in LA, so it will be much more convenient.

Unfortunately before she could be questioned further about this and about her plans for a wedding in Paris, her delicate health took a turn for the worst and she had to hang up the phone.

Definitely it is not easy being Gabi Grecko. Even with that engagement ring on her finger, you can’t escape the feeling that the road ahead will be anything but straightforward.
